Intent
At Beatrix Potter we are committed to developing our children’s joy and delight in learning. We believe that developing thinking skills so that our children are articulate, mindful, creative, reflective and evaluative learners helps everybody to find the best, as well as to be the best, in every area of the curriculum. That is why we have a strong focus on what is known as ‘metacognition’ (thinking about how to learn) and our staff use these techniques across every area that they teach in.
Our curriculum is rich, deep and broad. We believe that every child must have the highest standards of Maths and English in order to become our future historians, engineers, organisers, communicators, musicians, actors, coders, athletes, artists and medics. Of course the list could go on forever, but what underlines our intent is that every possibility is open, because every subject is important and invested in. Each subject is carefully planned to enable both consolidation and progression through the years.
In today’s knowledge rich environment made accessible through the internet, we believe that we must support our children to navigate the challenges and pleasures found in working with others. These are life skills. That is why we focus on collaborative and cooperative learning throughout the curriculum. Our children do have opportunities to work independently, but are often found discussing their thoughts in a group, learning to articulate their opinions and evaluate their thinking. As a part of this vision, we recognise how important first hand experience is to young learners and have trips planned throughout the years to develop and extend engagement and understanding.
IMPLEMENTING THE BP CURRICULUM
Each subject is carefully layered to develop and consolidate the skills and knowledge across the years. There is progression in our curriculum in every subject. Our lessons are explorative in nature and offer plenty of opportunity to develop critical thinking alongside knowledge and skills. We are an inclusive school and always take each child's starting point as place to work for stretch and challenge, or to help overcome any barriers. As part of our passion for learning we encourage children to develop their interests, setting personalised projects along the way. These are great opportunities for children to present to their class, developing those all important confidence and communication skills.

Teachers will use a range of resources that fit into the content of each subject and that may include enrichment trips to the riches of London and its surrounds. We may also invite experts in to enhance the children’s experience further.
Like all mainstream primary schools our gateway to learning is the national curriculum. More details can be found here:
