Our Approach to Teaching.
Our teaching approach incorporates both subject based and topic based teaching styles. Children in each class are organised by ability according to the subject area being taught, in the core subjects of mathematics and language the ability groups are more formalised to reflect the range of abilities present in any one class. Whatever approach is taken to teach a particular subject the strengths and weaknesses reflected in the ability of the class are reflected in the planning and presentation of the work. The school monitors each year group and carries out a range of standardised assessments to ensure the ability of the children is matched to the work level and that the levels are consistent with standards across the country. Our actual curriculum is contained in a detailed and comprehensive policy document, which is available for parents in our front entrance. School day The school is divided into three areas the Foundation Stage, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. Children enter Foundation 1 (nursery) after their third birthday. Key stage one commences in the year children are five and continues until seven at which time they move into key stage two until eleven. At the end of the two key stages national assessments are made of progress and reports sent to parents indicating progress. Reception class is now known as foundation 2, located in the formative foundation years, this is recognition of the vital foundation years from 3 to 5 the stepping stones on which to build success The school completes a report for all parents each year and holds two parents meetings a year to discuss formally the progress of individual children with parents. Informal contacts are encouraged if parents have concerns or queries over their childs progress. The actual length of the school day and the particular times for class groups is detailed in our facts and figures sheet.
